January - The Lotus
Posted on January 16 2018
The symbolic value of the lotus flower is vast. It spans numerous ancient Eastern cultures and is still considered one of the most sacred flowers today. With its roots based in mud, it submerges every night into murky river water, and—undeterred by its dirty environment—it miraculously re-blooms the next morning without residue on its petals.
The lotus stuns people with its ability to dip into the grime and revive itself unscathed—an incredible daily cycle of life, death, and sudden rebirth that can easily be described as a spiritual. It is no wonder the lotus holds such powerful symbolism—the flower simply defies logic.
Enlightenment is one of the most common symbolic interpretations of the lotus. It is no wonder, condsidering that the lotus rises from the mud (or muddy water) and blooms into a stunning and pristine flower. The mud is often thought to represent the hardships and obstacles that people experience as a critical part of being human. Most cultures interpret these hardships to be a way of building strength and character in a person. The lotus flower emerging from the mud represents our true selves, choosing the enlightened path in life, rather than that of least resistance.
The new year is a perfect time to embrace rebirth all around us, and there are few worldly creations that symbolize this process like the lotus flower.
